Privacy Policy
Wordscene is an app for learning English vocabulary, made by Javad Ataiy ("we", "us"). This policy explains what the app keeps on your device, what it saves if you sign in, what it sends to our servers, and what it never collects.
- You can use Wordscene without an account. Signing in is your choice.
- If you don't sign in, your learning progress stays on your device.
- If you sign in with Apple or Google, we save your progress so you can use it on your other devices.
- You can delete your account at any time in the app.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking, and we never sell data.
What stays on your device
If you don't sign in, these are stored only in the app on your phone, tablet or computer. They are not sent to us:
- Your practice list: the words you've added
- Your favorite categories
- Your learning progress, review schedule and streak
Your settings, such as translation language, new words per day and reminder time, always stay on your device, even if you sign in.
If you don't sign in, deleting the app deletes all of this. You can also clear your progress at any time in Settings → Reset Learning Progress.
If you sign in
Signing in is optional. You can sign in with Apple on iPhone and iPad, or with Google on iPhone, iPad and Android. We never see your password.
What we get from Apple or Google
- Apple: an ID for your account, and your email address if Apple shares it. If you choose Hide My Email, we get a private address from Apple instead of your real one.
- Google: an ID for your account and your email address. Google may also share your name and a link to your profile picture. Our sign-in provider stores these with your account, but the app doesn't show or use them.
We use this to sign you in and, if we have your email address, to find your account if you ask us to delete it. We don't send you marketing email.
What we save in your account
- Your practice list and favorite categories, and when you changed them
- Your learning progress and review schedule for each word, including when you last reviewed it
- For each day: how many cards you finished, how many new words you started, and whether you finished your practice. Your streak comes from this.
When you sign in, the progress on your device is added to your account. Your progress then saves automatically while you use the app, so you can use it on your other devices.
When you sign out, your progress stays in your account and is removed from that device.
What the app sends to our servers
An anonymous session
The first time the app goes online, it creates an anonymous session with our backend. This is a random identifier, not linked to your name, email or phone number. We use it to let the app download its content and to limit how often media can be requested, which protects the service from abuse.
If you sign in for the first time on a device, that identifier usually becomes the identifier of your account. Anything you sent earlier from that device, such as a word correction, is then connected to your account.
Downloading words, pictures and audio
The app downloads its vocabulary, illustrations and pronunciation audio from our servers. Like any internet request, these include technical information such as your IP address and device type, which our hosting provider processes to deliver the content. We don't use this information to identify you or to build a profile.
Checking that the app is real
Before the app downloads words, pictures and audio, it checks that it is the real Wordscene app from the App Store or Google Play, on a real device. For this check the app uses Google Firebase App Check, which uses Apple App Attest on iPhone and iPad and Google Play Integrity on Android. These services get technical information about the app and the device, such as the app version, the device model and a security token. They do not get your name, your email or your learning progress. We use the result only to stop other programs from copying our content.
Word corrections you send
If you use Report Issue / Suggest Fix on a word, we store the word, the changes you suggest, your translation language if one is on, the time, and your identifier. We use these reports only to correct the app's content.
Word and category requests
If you use Request a word or category in Settings, we store what you ask for, any note you add, the time, and your identifier. You can also add your email address, but only if you want a reply. We use requests only to decide what to add to the app, and an email address only to answer that request.
What we don't do
- We don't show ads.
- We don't use analytics, advertising or tracking tools, and we don't track you across other apps or websites.
- We don't sell or rent data, and we don't share it with anyone except the service providers below, who process it only to run Wordscene.
Reminders and pronunciation
Daily reminders are scheduled on your device by the app itself. No reminder data is sent to us. When a word has no recorded audio, the app uses your device's built-in text-to-speech voice.
Service providers
- Supabase hosts our database, file storage, accounts, saved progress and the anonymous sessions described above.
- Apple and Google sign you in, if you choose to sign in.
- Google (Firebase App Check) checks that requests come from the real Wordscene app, with Apple App Attest or Google Play Integrity.
- Cloudflare hosts this website and handles email sent to support@wordscene.app.
These providers may process data on servers outside your country.
How long we keep data
We keep your account and saved progress until you delete your account. We keep anonymous sessions, word corrections and requests for as long as they help us run and improve Wordscene, and delete corrections and requests once they are no longer needed. To have something removed, see Deleting your data.
Deleting your data
Here is how to delete what Wordscene keeps. You can also read this on its own page: Delete your account.
If you signed in
In the app, go to Settings → Delete account. If you signed in with Apple, Apple will ask you to confirm. This happens right away and you can't undo it.
If you can't use the app, email support@wordscene.app with the subject Delete my account. Send it from the email address of your account, or tell us that address. We delete the account within 30 days and reply to confirm. Apple doesn't always share an email address with us. If we can't find your account this way, sign in to the app and delete it in Settings.
We delete your account, the information from Apple or Google, your saved progress, practice list, favorites and daily counts, and your word corrections and requests. If you signed in with Apple and delete in the app, we also remove Wordscene's access to your Apple account.
To keep your account but delete your learning progress, go to Settings → Reset Learning Progress. This deletes your saved progress, review schedule, practice list, daily counts and streak on all your devices. Your favorites and your account stay. You can't undo this.
If you didn't sign in
- To clear your learning progress, review schedule and streak, go to Settings → Reset Learning Progress.
- To remove everything the app stores on your device, including your practice list and settings, delete the app.
To delete what you sent us:
- Email support@wordscene.app with the subject Delete my data.
- Tell us what to delete: the word you reported or the word or category you requested, roughly when you sent it, and the email address you included, if any. We can't look you up by name if you didn't sign in, so these details are how we find your data.
- We delete it within 30 days and reply to confirm.
Copies that can remain
We make private backups of our app content. These also include word corrections, requests with any email address you added, and anonymous identifiers, so a copy of these can remain in a backup after you delete them, until that backup is deleted. We don't use these copies for anything except restoring the service. Our backups don't include your saved progress or your sign-in details.
Our hosting providers' short-term backups and Cloudflare's security logs expire on their own and aren't used to identify you.
Children
We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Children under 13 can use Wordscene, but they should not sign in. If you believe a child has signed in or sent us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
The website
wordscene.app uses no cookies and no analytics. Cloudflare may keep standard request logs, such as IP addresses, for security.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. If a change affects what the app collects, we'll also mention it in the app's release notes.
